World of Hearing — shop entrance with balloon columns, coloured display walls and a curved display window with timber slats

World of Hearing — Schoonenberg

Retail — Leidschendam

An innovative retail concept in which hearing, technology and interactive experience come together.

Summary

For World of Hearing by Schoonenberg in Westfield Mall of the Netherlands, we worked on a retail concept in which customer experience and specialist hearing care come together. Alongside the bespoke interior, acoustic requirements played an important role, with soundproofing solutions in the rooms where hearing tests take place.

Project

World of Hearing by Schoonenberg opened in Leidschendam in October 2019 as the concept's second location in the Netherlands: a store concept that presents hearing in a less traditional way, focused on discovering, experiencing and trying things for yourself. The store offers a self-screening room, specialist hearing solutions and an Experience Room in which visitors can experience different listening situations, among other things.

Approach

The interior had to accommodate several functions: reception and advice, product display, self-testing and interactive demonstrations. In addition, specific acoustic requirements applied to the rooms where hearing tests take place.

In those test environments, sound insulation was essential. We therefore worked with soundproofing and sound-absorbing materials, so that ambient noise is kept to a minimum and hearing tests can take place in a controlled environment.

For Hemlock, the challenge lay not only in creating a high-quality retail environment, but also in executing bespoke work to the right technical standard in rooms where acoustics are a direct part of how they function.

Detail

The most distinctive aspect of World of Hearing is its combination of retail, technology and specialist hearing functions. In the Experience Room and test environments, the focus is not only on appearance but also on the quality of the acoustic environment.

The hearing test rooms are therefore fitted with soundproofing materials and acoustic features that help reduce disruptive ambient noise. In this way the interior supports not only the customer experience, but also the accuracy and quality of the service.
